Finally I got the chance to do some of the most loved and requested South Asian recipes. Garlic Naan is a quintessential yeasted bread common in India and Pakistan. It is prepared in a special clay oven at restaurants.

However, there are several recipes that can be adapted to make a homemade version of this delicacy. I have come up with one such recipe along with its variant.

You could either ferment it with yeast alone or add some leavening agents as well.

My video tutorial focuses on a basic yeasted naan, but I am sharing another version of the same recipe below.

So next time you crave for an aromatic garlic naan to accompany your main course, do give this recipe a try. It’s absolutely worth all the effort.

  3. 1/4 cup chopped coriander
ALTERNATE RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
  1. To the above ingredients add
  2. 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  3. 1/4 cup yogurt
Instructions
  1. In the bowl of a standing mixer, whisk together flour, salt, sugar, yeast, melted butter and chopped garlic. With a dough hook attachment mix at lowest speed for a minute. Now increase the speed to medium and add warm milk.
  2. Continue to mix at high speed for 5 minutes till the dough comes together and is soft and supple.
  3. Shift the dough into a greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or more till the dough is double in size.
  4. Cover a baking tray with aluminium foil and brush ghee on it.
  5. Divide the dough into 6 equal sized balls and apply some ghee on the work surface. Press the dough ball with your greased hands. Continue to flatten it out into a medium sized circle. Do not use a rolling pin. Place the shaped naans on greased baking tray.
  6. After shaping naans let rest for another 10 minutes.
  7. Now rub some softened butter on each shaped naan. Press in chopped garlic chunks and coriander. Make indentation marks all over the naan using greased fingers.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 20 minutes.
  9. As soon as the naans come out of the oven, sprinkle water and brush butter.
METHOD FOR ALTERNATE RECIPE
  1. Same as above. Add in baking soda and yogurt to the mixing bowl when whisking together all ingredients.
